ABRSM Grade 5 Theory Lessons in Ilkley and Online
A common task I've undertaken in the past is fast-tracking and preparing pupils for their ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory. It is a compulsary requirement for pupils pursuing ABRSM Grade 6 and beyond on their chosen instrument and I help them achieve this both in person with lessons at my Ilkley teaching studio and online.

It’s a written exam that covers essential music literacy — including key signatures, chords, transposition, ornaments, and time signatures. It’s a prerequisite for ABRSM Grade 6+ instrument exams.
Do I need to take Grade 1–4 theory first?
No – you can go straight to Grade 5. Many students fast-track it with dedicated support, especially when preparing for higher instrument grades.
Do you offer lessons online?
Yes – I teach both in-person at my Ilkley studio and online via Zoom, FaceTime etc, using screen sharing to make the information engaging and understandable.
Can you help adult learners or late starters?

Music Theory primer
In basic terms, Music Theory encompasses an understanding how music is written and how it works. This can range from how to count beats and read musical notation; an appreciation of the range of tones and textures produced by different instruments and understanding of arrangement, through to a deep analysis of musical harmony and form - whether it be classical, pop or jazz. It is the ability to decode and understand what you are hearing.
